Understanding the Nature of the Federal Resume Writing WorkshopThe Federal Resume Writing Workshop held by the National Park Service is an initiative of the NPS Service. It is intended to provide leaders and managers in all sectors of the agency with the means to improve their own resume writing skills. While the workshop is primarily aimed at promotion, it does have the potential to assist current employees in order to help them get new employment or move up to a higher position.On the first day of the workshop, representatives from NPS' Human Resources division will begin by offering an overview of the workshop. An introduction video will be shown before the event, and announcements will be made regarding lunch, registration, and related information. The second part of the session will begin with a discussion of the training in resume writing that is going to take place. Representatives from the office of Human Resources and the Education section of the Human Resources department w ill be present to ensure that the participants understand the importance of preparation is essential to successful resume writing.The third part of the presentation is then opened up for questions. After an introduction about the government work environment, future career goals and opportunities, and an overview of the career opportunities available, a question and answer session will be facilitated. After some questions are answered, a report will be presented, detailing what has been covered during the workshop. Participants should feel free to take notes during this portion of the meeting.The final portion of the workshop will last for two hours. It will include questions and answers regarding a wide range of topics. At the end of the final session, participants should be able to better determine if the education they received in resume writing at their workplace qualifies them for the job. The workshop is intended to be an informal forum where participants can discuss skills, kn owledge, and processes that they feel could use improvement.What is interesting about the workshop is thatit not only caters to the HR function of the agency but the Education section as well. Because of the heavy emphasis on education in its presentation materials, participants can see how education can impact their career prospects and experiences. An example of the types of topics covered during the workshop are written communication skills, communication styles, career development and training, creativity, problem solving, goal setting, interpersonal skills, and team building.While the National Park Service is the provider of the workshop, the Federal Resume Writing Workshop is open to all agencies within the federal government. The topics and methods used at the workshop can also be applied to any other career field. The workshop is intended to open the doors for a productive conversation among employees and promote a sense of teamwork and camaraderie.If the HR or Education dep artment at the agency has not had much exposure to resume writing, it may be a good idea to read some resume writing books or tutorials. Some of the books discussed at the workshop may be provided during the course of the workshop to make it easy for participants to brush up on their resume writing skills. Career counseling services may also be arranged at the workshop for the benefit of those who need help with career planning.As career goals and career training programs continue to evolve, people will continue to be placed in positions that require new skills, improved skills, and knowledge of existing training and skills. An agency that desires to be competitive will need to continually focus on training its employees for new career opportunities. During the Federal Resume Writing Workshop, career oriented managers can begin the process of assuring that their resumes, along with their efforts, help boost their overall career goals.
